"Capturing the timeless beauty of the Equine Spirit."
Artist's Statement
“I’ve always felt I was born with a pencil in my hand and for as long as I can remember my subject has always been horses. The horse and the beauty of it’s form and spirit are the foundations of my portraits. They are one of a few subjects that stir the need inside me to create.”
Maria has been drawing horses since she was a child in Staten Island, NY. Although she studied some fine art in college, she feels her talent is natural and self taught. Her works usually start with a photograph that she has taken and inspires her, then evolve into compositions in which light against dark and fine detail are the primary focus. The pencil is her tool of choice because it gives her great control and versatility.
“To me art is a synthesis of my personal feelings, a subject that inspires me and my materials and techniques. Realism is my primary goal. I want my subject to look as though it will come to life and canter off the paper.”
Maria has recently begun drawing another subject she has a passion for - Native Americans. "Native American cultures have always been of great interest to me. I enjoy learning about each different tribe and meeting different people in that culture. I have been out west and have seen the very poor conditions some of our Native Americans live in and I would like to use my artwork to help Native American children and young adults in some way if possible.
